Why safety comes first
An investigation is never worth a broken ankle, a panic attack, or a confrontation with someone who doesn't want you there. Before any sensor turns on, you handle physical, legal, emotional, and team safety. A calm investigator captures cleaner evidence than a startled one — fear leaks into your data and your interpretation.
Physical safety checklist
Walk the location in daylight first. Map exits, hazards (rotting floors, broken glass, asbestos, drop-offs), and cell signal coverage. Bring a flashlight, backup light, water, charged phone, and first-aid basics. Never investigate alone in unfamiliar spaces. Wear closed shoes and long sleeves in derelict buildings.
Legal & ethical safety
You need permission. Explicit, written when possible. Trespassing isn't 'paranormal research' — it's a crime, and it taints any evidence you capture. Respect 'no recording' wishes. Never identify a private home in published content without consent.
Emotional safety
Set a session length and stick to it. Have a buddy who knows where you are and when you'll check in. If you feel overwhelmed, leave. SpiritMesh's Grounding Mode (the 'I feel overwhelmed' button) exists for this. You aren't a bad investigator for stopping — you're a sustainable one.
